I FOUND

the ditch

Brenda Voshalike graduated in 1973 from Cannon Falls High School, regarded as a better-than-average student throughout her academic schooling. She believed she had her future planned. Applying and being accepted to St. Olaf College in Northfield, Brenda graduated in 1977 with a biology degree. She intended to enter medical school and become a doctor.

“I honestly thought taking the class and becoming an EMT would be great background for medical school,” she said. “I had the time because I had a job at the time to try and pay off some of my student debt from college.”

Brenda took the class and soon could go on a few runs in the ambulance. Her life completely changed. “Going on just those few calls, I really liked the contact with people. Being in those situations seemed right and I wanted more.”

She never felt bad about bypassing medical school. Even though some may have questioned the issue of losing out on significant earning potential, Brenda didn’t waver.
