Lenny Hoisington always had pets while growing up in Rochester—cats, hamsters and hermit crabs, but his family did not have a dog until he was fifteen, when his stepdad moved in with his cattle dog, Anee. “I finally got my own dog, a black lab named Grizzly, when I graduated from high school.”

Lenny attended the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, earning a bachelor’s degree in business and marketing. It was more sensible for him to leave Grizzly at home in Rochester when he went off to college, but, always an animal lover, he did manage to get a cat, Squiggy, who became his sidekick for many years.
